Dharamshala: The Tibetan Medicine and Astrology Institute marked the commemoration of the 4th Sowa Rigpa Day last Sunday in the presence of Health Secretary Palden Dhondup, Dr Anil Gupta (Deputy Director of Kangra’s Ayurveda’s Department), personal physicians of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and some 30 Tibetan doctors including aspiring students of Tibetan medicine.
Chairman of the Central Council of Tibetan Medicine (CCTM), Dr Tsering Tsamchoe briefed the gathering about the objective and evolution of Sowa Rigpa while owning its success to the profound vision of His Holiness the Dalai Lama who prompted the re-establishment and revival of the ancient practice of Tibetan medicine in exile.
“The day is not only a reflection of gratitude to pioneers of Tibetan medicine but also honouring the contributions of medical scholars. It is also a day to commit ourselves to the guidance of His Holiness,” said Dr Tsamchoe.
Special guest Dr Anil underscored the essentiality of examining the scientific viability of this traditional practice of medicine for further development.
Health Secretary Palden Dhondup said in his address, “The observance of this day signifies remembrance of the ancient religious kingdom of Tibet and the reign of successive Dalai Lamas for making Tibet an epicentre of learning this practical knowledge. After coming into exile, one of the primary initiatives commenced by His Holiness was the revival of Tibetan medicine for the benefit of all sentient beings”.
In recognition of the special contribution made toward the development of Tibetan medicine, this year’s Yuthog Award (award of gratitude) was presented to the personal physician of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Dr Penpa Tsering.
