Vienna: On 28 June 2025, a deeply meaningful celebration unfolded in the heart of Vienna, Austria, as members of the Tibetan community and friends of Tibet gathered to celebrate His Holiness 90th birthday known as “Ghoton”; A traditional pre-birthday celebration in Tibetan culture. This event was both a joyous tribute and a reaffirmation of unity, resilience, and peace.
The occasion brought together an estimated 400 guests, including prominent figures, spiritual supporters, and cultural groups. Among the honoured guests were Dr. Martin Schauhofer, Secretary for Buddhism in Austria, Ama Elisabeth Zimmermann from Save Tibet, Karl Leitner representing Friends of Tibet, members of the PLC Gelug Zentrum and various other Tibet support groups. Their presence signified the enduring ties between the Tibetan community and its Austrian allies.
The event began with a traditional offering of Desil and butter tea, a gesture steeped in Tibetan hospitality and spiritual symbolism. This was followed by the solemn singing of the Austrian national anthem, reflecting the deep integration of Tibetan values with the culture of their host nation.
Adding to the colour and warmth of the celebration, cultural dance groups from different Austrian states performed traditional dances, expressing solidarity through the universal language of music and movement. The event reached its emotional peak with the ceremonial cutting of a birthday cake, symbolising joy, gratitude, and the collective prayers for His Holiness’s health and long life.
Beyond the performances and rituals, the gathering was a powerful reminder of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s global influence — not just as a spiritual leader of the Tibetan people but as a messenger of compassion, non-violence, and interfaith harmony. His teachings have resonated across borders, inspiring countless individuals to lead lives of mindfulness, tolerance, and altruism.
The organisers extended heartfelt thanks to every Tibetan living in Austria, whose unwavering faith and active participation helped in making this celebration a success. They also expressed deep appreciation to the Austrian friends and supporters of Tibet, whose continued commitment strengthens the Tibetan cause in exile.
In celebrating this milestone birthday, the Tibetan community in Austria did more than honour their spiritual leader; they also reaffirmed their identity, culture, and collective hope for a peaceful future. The event was a moving testament to how tradition, resilience, and solidarity can thrive even far from home.
