MUNDGOD: Twenty Tibetan Buddhist nuns, who are set to become the first Geshema degree holders in history, participated in the four-day Geshema debate session at Jangchup Choeling nunnery, Mundgod.
As requested by the Department of Religion and Culture, the debate session was presided over by His Eminence Rizong Rinpoche, former Gaden Tripa and head of the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism.
Geshema degree is an important academic representation of a student’s abilities and the depth of his/her study. Therefore, a series of examinations were successfully held from 2013 – 2016 under the vigilance of the Department of Religion and Culture.
The twenty Tibetan Buddhist nuns who cleared the exams will receive the degree certificates from His Holiness the Dalai Lama at Drepung Lachi on 22 December 2016.
The decision to confer Geshema degrees to qualified Tibetan Buddhist nuns was announced in 2012, in accordance with the vision of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
