Rome, Italy: The Tibetan Community in Italy, together with Italian supporters and friends of Tibet, organised a peaceful demonstration outside the Chinese Embassy in Rome on 11 July, 2026, to honour the memory of Tibetan activist Lobga Rangzen (Lobsang Palden), who passed away following a self-immolation protest near the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The gathering took place at Via Bruxelles, Rome, where Tibetan community members assembled to pay tribute to Lobga Rangzen, express their condolences, and raise awareness of issues concerning Tibetan identity, cultural preservation, religious freedom, and human rights.
Participants observed the demonstration peacefully, carrying Tibetan flags, banners, and messages of remembrance. Community representatives and supporters delivered speeches highlighting the importance of preserving Tibetan language, culture, traditions, and spiritual heritage. The event served as a platform for the Tibetan community in Italy to express solidarity and to share their concerns with the international community.
Lobga Rangzen carried out the self-immolation protest on 2 July 2026 near the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Tibetan organisations and supporters described his action as a call for international attention to the challenges faced by Tibetans and issues related to the protection of Tibetan identity and cultural rights. He later died as a result of injuries sustained during the incident.
The Rome demonstration formed part of a wider series of memorial gatherings and solidarity events organised by Tibetan communities following Lobga Rangzen’s death. These events reflected the Tibetan diaspora’s continued efforts to peacefully raise awareness and seek international attention through public expressions of remembrance and advocacy.
The Tibetan Community in Italy stated that the demonstration was held in a spirit of peace, dignity, and respect. Participants called for continued dialogue, understanding, and support for the preservation of cultural and religious traditions.
The Chinese government has consistently rejected allegations of human rights violations in Tibet and maintains that Tibet is an integral part of China. Meanwhile, Tibetan organisations and supporters continue to raise concerns regarding cultural, religious, and social issues affecting Tibetans.
The Rome gathering concluded with prayers, tributes, and moments of remembrance for Lobga Rangzen. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful advocacy and to continuing efforts to promote awareness of Tibetan issues among the international community.
