5 Sept. 2020, New Delhi: On the auspicious occasion of Teacher’s Day and COVID-19 guidelines still in place, a virtual training program related to accounting was organized by Mr. Jacob David, Regional Convener, Core Group for Tibetan Cause – India and ITFS Bangalore in coordination with ITCO Delhi on 5 September, 2020. The resource person for the program was Dr. Marcus Rodrigs, Online Education Director, Office PVC – Business & Law ( Accounting & Finance) at The University of Newcastle, Australia who has voluntarily took out his time for the endeavor. The program was well participated by around 40 Accounts Teachers and Accountants of the Sambhota Schools, TCV, THF, CST, Namgyal Schools (Nepal), Dalai Lama College and other higher Tibetan Institutions.
Dr. Marcus spoke about a unique model known as the CR3 Model for teachers and lecturers to teach accounts which has been awarded by the Australian Government besides being implemented across universities and colleges in Australia. He said that the CR3 is a new model of the flipped classroom that has been developed and tested. In CR3, each learning outcome (no more than 5) for each topic in the course is supported by a less-than-10-minute online video (‘Concepts’). Students watch the video for the first learning outcome/concept; students are then directed to relevant pages in the text book (‘Revise’) to read; after which students must complete and score more than 50% in a short online assessment (‘Reflect’) before gaining access to the next video on the next learning outcome.
Further he explained that this ensures independent student-centred learning, progressively, with immediate feedback. Students then attend a two-hour workshop (for deep learning of ‘Concepts’ they have watched on the video, ‘Revised’ using the text and ‘Reflected’ upon in the online tests) at university to ‘Reinforce’ what they have learned online at home. The workshop (students in groups of 5) is conducted using net-support software that allows the academic to be able to access and assess progressive work in the groups. The model has been tested in a large first year accounting course with positive feedback and improvement in students’ progressive grades and satisfaction of students.
The program came out to be highly interactive with the participants raising their doubts and feedbacks to Dr. Marcus, who in return joyfully answered to each of them which was much liked by all.
At the conclusion, Mr. Sangpo Rinzin, Principal of Sambhota Tibetan School, Mundgod offered the vote of thanks to Dr. Marcus Rodrigs for his resourceful sharing of knowledge, all the participants for their time and energy and most importantly Mr. Jacob David and ITCO Delhi for organizing and coordinating the program.
