Dharamshala: Chief Election Commissioner Wangdu Tsering, and additional commissioners, Geshema Delek Wangmo and Sonam Gyaltsen, the Election Commission today addressed a press briefing announcing revised results of the preliminary round of election for the Sikyong and members of the 17th Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile.
As per Article 49 (1) (A) of the electoral rules and regulation,” which states that “the election commission should shortlist candidates not less than thrice the number of stipulated seats in the respective constituents of the Tibetan Parliament from the preliminary election. Election Commission declared 30 shortlisted parliament candidates yesterday each from the three traditional provinces of Tibet, 6 candidates each from four schools of Tibetan Buddhism and Bon religion, 6 from North & South America, and Europe & Africa. 3 candidates are shortlisted from Australasia (excluding India, Nepal, and Bhutan). As per the EC regulation, a candidate cannot contest for more than one seat at a time and in case a candidate has won more than one seat, the candidate has to retain only one.
Out of the 30 shortlisted candidates announced yesterday, two candidates have been listed for two seats simultaneously as such they have been urged to vacate one of the two seats, thus altering the results announced by the Election Commission yesterday. The Chief Election Commissioner further reminded 7 days period i.e till 16th February for a candidate to withdraw their candidature and they may do so by writing to the Election Commission. Withdrawal of candidature won’t be entertained once the final list is announced.
The electoral process for the final round of election for Sikyong and members of the 17th Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile will be announced on 21 March 2021. Until the announcement, no campaigning by the candidates, supporters, or public is allowed.
