Bylakuppe: The 3-day workshop on Competency-Based Assessment organised by the Department of Education, CTA successfully concluded on Friday, 19 August 2022 at the Sera Jey Yiga Choeling Center in Byalkuppe. The workshop focussed on competency-based assessment which is an important component of the National Education Policy 2020 of India. The resource persons conducted hands-on activities for the participants to develop competency-based test items and assessment tools such as rubrics and maintaining a portfolio.
29 teachers from 15 Tibetan schools in Central and South India, and 2 monastic schools in Bylakuppe participated in the workshop. At the inaugural program held on 17 August, Tenzin Dorjee, Head of Academic Section, DoE outlined the various initiatives taken by the DoE for teacher professional development and in particular the background of organising Competency-Based Assessment Workshop for the teachers.
Lobsang Yeshi, Settlement Officer of Lugsam Tibetan Settlement attended the opening program and remarked upon the significance of teaching as one of the noblest professions of all considering how teachers are the makers of individuals, communities, and nations at large. He advised the teachers to update their professional capacity as per the need of time and situation and also emphasized that teachers imbibe compassion and kindness in their dealing with children and honesty towards their profession. He also stressed the need for teachers to model behaviour to the children by giving a few real-life and relevant examples such as educating them through environment-friendly behaviour, going vegetarian, opting for public transport, etc.
A farewell luncheon was hosted for the resource persons and the participants on the final day. Tenzin Dorjee thanked the resource persons and the participants for effective engagement during the workshop and urged them to share their learning with their colleagues at their respective schools. As per the participants’ feedback collected through the Google Form, the workshop was rated highly for the training methodology, content, administrative support, and overall facilitation of the workshop. Tsering Yangkyi of Academic Section, DoE accompanied and assisted Tenzin Dorjee in organising the workshop. The 3-day competency-based workshop was funded by USAID.
