BERKELEY: The United State’s Berkeley City Council has unanimously passed a resolution on the unprecedented wave of self-immolation protests in Tibet.

The bill co-authored by a University of California, Berkeley doctoral student in response to the wave of self-immolations in Tibet has been passed into law by Berkeley City Council at it’s January 31st City council meeting.

The resolution calls the self-immolations as a reflection of the Chinese government’s repression of Tibetan people.

The resolution also calls for the Obama administration to insist that China work toward a resolution to affirm Tibetans’ right to social equality.

Copies of the resolution will be sent by the city to numerous state senators and national agencies, including the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in San Francisco.

As much as twenty Tibetans have set themselves on fire since 2009 in protest against the policies of the Chinese government in Tibet.

Another six Tibetans were feared shot dead by Chinese security forces during a peaceful protest in eastern Tibet’s Serthar, Dragko and Ngaba regions.

Internet connections and phones were severely crippled for the last three weeks.

Keeping in view the urgent situation in Tibet, a worldwide vigil organised by the Central Tibetan Administration is being held today in support of the fundamental rights of the Tibetan people and to show solidarity with the sufferings of the Tibetan people inside Tibet.
