DELHI: India Tibet Coordination Office in association with The History and Political Science Society of Shri Ram College of Commerce organised ”A Day for Tibet” program at the college seminar room on 1 March 2019. Sri Ram College of Commerce is one of the prestigious colleges of Delhi University.
The program was well attended by around 80 students of the college as well as from other colleges and a faculty member.
At the outset of the program, the students, staffs and guest speakers observed a minute of silence to pay their tribute to the Indian soldiers martyred at Pulwama District, Jammu & Kashmir on 14 February 2019.
Karma Dhargyal, Coordinator of India Tibet Coordination Office welcomed the audience sitting in the room. He gave a brief introduction about India Tibet Coordination Office and the program ”A Day for Tibet”.
Tenzin Lekshay, Deputy Director of Tibet Policy Institute, Central Tibetan Administration who was one of the guest speakers delivered a talk on India – Tibet Relations. He spoke to the students that the relationship between India and Tibet dates back to ancient times. Lekshay said ” Tibet is cultural, linguistically and spiritually related with India as most of these had been adopted from Indian tradition”. He added ”India is our guru and we are chela. It becomes the duty of guru to help his chela in a difficult time.”
Tempa Gyaltsen, Research Fellow at Tibet Policy Institute, Central Tibetan Administration another guest speaker in his talk titled ”The Importance of Tibet’s Ecology and Its Impact on Downstream Nations especially India” gave an overview of Tibet’s Ecology and its significance through a powerpoint presentation. He told the audience about the ecological destruction carried out by the Chinese government in Tibet for their vested interest especially buildings of big dams on major rivers flowing down to India which will have dire consequences in the subcontinent.
After the talks, the students in the audience raised their questions and the speakers gladly answered to them. It was a good interactive session for both the students and the speakers.
Two short documentary films titled ”Crackdown in Tibet” and ”Meltdown in Tibet” was shown to the audience and these provided visual knowledge to them.
There was photo exhibition titled ”India and Tibet Relations” put up outside the seminar room which was visited and much liked by the students.
India Tibet Coordination Office distributed books and pamphlets on Tibet to the students and staff during the program.
Gazala Faredi, Faculty member of the college thanked the organisers for the wonderful program and the students for their good participation.
At the last, India Tibet Coordination Office felicitated the guest speakers and the faculty member with Tibetan white scarf called khata.
Adding to this, there was a brief session on Tibet at Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution (NMCPCR), Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi on 28 February 2019. Tsering Dhundup, Secretary at Bureau of His Holiness the Dalai Lama accompanied by Karma Dhargyal, Coordinator of India Tibet Coordination Office and staffs visited the centre. Tsering Dhundup briefed the final year students of the centre on Tibet and took questions from them. It was a good awareness and briefing session on Tibet.
”A Day for Tibet” is an educational program to create awareness and enlightens the students and staff of schools, colleges and universities in India on Tibet and its issue.
