Brussels: The Office of Tibet Brussels, launched a campaign titled “A Day for Tibet” in the European Parliament to mark the 66th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day.
The initiative called on MEPs during the plenary session in Strasbourg to wear a pin especially designed for the occasion representing both the European and Tibetan flags, symbolising support for the Tibetan people and their peaceful freedom struggle.
Members were briefed on the significance of the Tibetan National Uprising Day and its importance to Tibetans and their global supporters.
The campaign aimed to raise awareness of the ongoing challenges faced by Tibet and to call for greater international attention to the region’s human rights situation.
The campaign further aimed to highlight the plight of the 157 Tibetans who have self-immolated in protest against China’s repressive policies, calling for freedom inside Tibet and the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
The European Parliament’s response was overwhelmingly positive, with a large number of MEPs proudly wearing the pin throughout the day and week, sending a clear message of solidarity and support for Tibet.
This was not only a symbolic gesture but also an opportunity for MEPs to reinforce their commitment to human rights, democracy, and the principles of freedom that are central to the values of the European Union. By showing their solidarity with Tibet, the European Parliament has highlighted its role in advocating for the rights of oppressed beyond the shores of the EU.
A number of MEPs also expressed their support on social media:
