
NEW DELHI: Tibetans in Samyeling settlement based in Majnukatilla, Delhi, organised a prayer vigil for late Tibetan self-immolater Tenzin Choeying on 23 July.
Tenzin Choeying, a third year student of Central University of Tibetan Studies, set himself on fire in protest against China’s repressive policies in Tibet on Friday, 14 July. Grievously injured, he was shifted to Safdarjung hospital in Delhi for emergency treatment where he succumbed to burn injuries on Saturday, 22 July around 4:50 pm.
As a mark of respect for the departed soul, the residents of Samyeling and Bodh Vihar in Delhi organised a prayer vigil on 23 July from 06:00 to 07:30 pm. The residents prayed for his noble rebirth and paid homage to his sacrifice for the Tibetan cause.
Currently in Delhi, Choeying’s body will reach Dharamshala on 25 July. He will be cremated according to Tibetan Buddhist traditions on the morning of 26 July as advised by Tibetan astrological calculations.
Son of father Ngawang Khedup and mother Tashi Yangzom, Choeying is the youngest of four siblings of the family.
