Dharamsala 11 March, 2005: His Holiness the Dalai Lama reassured the Chinese authorities that ‘we remain fully committed to the Middle Way Approach of not seeking independence for Tibet and willing to remain within the People’s Republic of China.
His Holiness was speaking yesterday at the 46th Anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day which was commemorated at the Tsuglakhang courtyard. Hundreds of Tibetans and Tibet supporters gathered at the Tsuglakhang courtyard minus the huge banners and ubiquitous placards which had been part of the day for the last 45 years, courtesy the revival of ties between Beijing and Dharamsala.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama said that ‘the lack of true ethnic equality and harmony based on trust, and the absence of genuine stability in Tibet clearly shows that things are not well in Tibet and that basically there is a problem’.
Since the inception of the Tibet Autonomous Region, His Holiness said, the Chinese leaders have solely held the real authority.
Meanwhile, Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche, the Kalon Tripa of the Central Tibetan Administration, said in his statement that his administration has decided to put more efforts towards negotiations and that efforts will be made ‘to respond to and draw lessons from the suggestions made by the People’s Republic of China.’
While appreciating the recent revival of ties with China, Mr. Pema Jungney, the Chairman of the Assembly of the Tibetan People’s Deputies, urged China to start actual negotiation soon to ensure China’s integrity and stability.
