March to Capital Wraps up Sheep Year
Dharamsala, 3 February: Around seventy people will dedicate this New Year to the cause of Tibet. A march on foot to the Indian capital from the headquarters of the exile Tibetan administration, according to Tibetan Youth Congress, the organisers, is aimed at drawing the world’s attention to the deteriorating situation inside Tibet.
The 535-kilometre walk to Delhi beginning on 11 February will enter Delhi on 10 March, 2004, the 45th National Uprising Day.
Organisers say the march will highlight the violation of human rights in Tibet, campaign for the release of Tulku Tenzin Delek who awaits a death penalty and other political prisoners, and appeal to the United Nations to pressurise China into accepting an independent fact-finding delegation to Tibet.
One of the eight major Tibetan non governmental organisations, the Tibetan Youth Congress has taken up many such protest marches and demonstrations for Tibetan cause and is the largest and the most widespread NGO of the exile Tibetan community.
