His Holiness to Visit North and South America this Year
New York, 14 July: His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the 1989 Nobel Peace laureate and spiritual and temporal leader of the Tibetan people, will visit Miami, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico from September 19 to October 7, 2004.
During his 19-day visit, His Holiness will offer public lectures to promote the basic human values in society, participate in interfaith prayers, give teachings on Buddhist philosophy, and participate in dialogue with academics and intellectuals.
Commencing the visit in Miami, Florida (September 19-22), His Holiness will offer a two-day teaching on Padmasambhava’s “The Instructions on the Garland of Views” and a public talk on “World Peace Through Inner Peace”, sponsored by the Osel Dorje Nyingpo Center.

From Miami, His Holiness will visit Puerto Rico for three days (September 23 to 25), and give a public talk on “Universal Responsibility”, participate in an interfaith prayer, receive an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the University of Puerto Rico and give a teaching to the Buddhist community on “Eight Verses for Training the Mind”. From September 26 to 28, His Holiness will visit San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, where he will give a public talk on “Inner Peace, Outer Peace” at the National Theatre and a lecture at the University of Costa Rica on “Tolerance and Contentment: Path to Happiness”. His Holiness will also address the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica, give a teaching to the Buddhist community, and participate in interfaith prayers at the auditorium of Episcopal Conference and the National Children’s Museum.

From San Jose, His Holiness will visit San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador (September 29 and 30). There, His Holiness will give a public talk on “Outer Peace through Inner Peace”, and a lecture on “Introduction to Buddhism” to the Salvadorian Buddhist community. He will also give a talk on “Non-Violence and Social Stability” to the Salvadorian intellectuals and artists, and participate in Interfaith Prayers.
The Mayor of San Salvador will present His Holiness with the Key to the City.

On October 1 and 2, His Holiness will visit Guatemala City, the capital of Guatemala, where he will meet the Mayan community leaders, headed by fellow Nobel Peace Laureate Rigoberto Menchu, and also give a public talk on “Power of Compassion” at the National Theater and lecture on “Four Noble Truths” to the Guatemalan Buddhist community. In addition, he will participate in interfaith prayers.

From Guatemala City, Holiness will visit Mexico City for five days (October 3 to 7). He will give a public talk on “Ethics for the New Millennium” at the National Auditorium (10,000 seating capacity) and a three-day teaching on Geshe Chekawa’s “Seven-Point Mind Training” at Metropolitan Theatre.
He will also participate in the “Interfaith Prayer for Peace”, hosted by Archbishop Monsignor Norberto Rivera at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico City and deliver a lecture on “Educating the Mind, Educating the Heart” at National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and Universidad Iberoamericana. His Holiness will receive an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the Universidad Iberoamericana.

Commenting on the visit, the Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to the Americas, Nawang Rabgyal, said, “As a man of peace and non-violence, His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s primary mission, wherever he travels, is to promote basic human values, inter-religious harmony and world peace, and to preserve the Tibetan cultural heritage.”
His Holiness is visiting Puerto Rico, El Salvador and Guatemala for the first time and Costa Rica and Mexico after 15 years. He visited Costa Rica and Mexico in 1989, the same year when he received the Nobel Peace Prize.
