
Washington, D.C.: Tibetan Community Associations across various states in the United States organised celebrations to commemorate the 91st birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama from 4 to 6 July 2026.
The celebrations brought together Tibetans residing in the respective states, friends and supporters of the Tibet, representatives of different religious traditions, members of government and parliament, state and city officials, as well as Tibetan youth.
The programmes commenced with the offering of a mandala and the three auspicious representations of the Buddha’s body, speech, and mind before an enthroned portrait of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Guests then offered ceremonial khatags, followed by the singing of the national anthems of Tibet and the United States.
Representative Namgyal Choedup from the Office of Tibet in Washington D.C., attended the celebration in New York, extended greetings to the gathering, and read the Kashag’s official message on the occasion of His Holiness’ birthday.
Representatives of various religious communities, local Tibetan associations, government officials, and other distinguished guests also addressed the gathering. In their remarks, they paid tribute to His Holiness’ lifelong and extraordinary contributions to advancing world peace, compassion, non-violence, interfaith harmony, and universal human values.
On the occasion, members of the United States Senate and House of Representatives issued resolutions recognising His Holiness’ enduring contributions to peace and human values. In addition, mayors from several cities presented proclamations and messages of congratulations, reaffirming their continued support for His Holiness’ humanitarian work and for the just cause of the Tibetan people.
The celebrations also featured vibrant cultural performances by Tibetan children and youth, showcasing the richness of Tibetan cultural heritage through traditional songs and dances, which concluded the morning programme.
In the afternoon, the gathering held a special memorial prayers and offerings in honour of the late Tibetan activist Lobga Rangzen, who self-immolated in front of the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 2 July 2026 and later passed away from his injuries.
