Geneva: UN Advocacy Officer Phuntsok Topgyal from the Tibet Bureau in Geneva attended the closing ceremony of the Gyalyum Chenmo Memorial Gold Cup in Zurich on 16 August 2025.
Marking its first-ever edition in Europe, the tournament was held in Switzerland with the aim of fostering unity among Tibetans across the continent and celebrating Tibetan identity. Twelve teams from Switzerland, Belgium, France, Liechtenstein, and England participated in the event.
Following three days of spirited and competitive matches, the final was contested between Bhoepa United and the Belgium team. Bhoepa United emerged victorious, becoming the inaugural champions of the Gyalyum Chenmo Memorial Gold Cup in Europe.
In his keynote address, Chief Guest Phuntsok Topgyal emphasised that the essence of competition lies beyond winning or losing. “What matters most is what you take away from the field — learning new skills, exchanging experiences, and inspiring the young Tibetans who watch you,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of teamwork, he remarked, “Even if you are the best player on the field, without teamwork, you will not win. This teaches us that no individual alone can bring about change. Real victory comes through unity, cooperation, and collective strength — not just in football, but in life and in our Tibetan freedom struggle.”
He also noted the symbolic power of such events for the Tibetan diaspora. “Although we do not yet compete under our own national flag like other free nations, tournaments like this empower Tibetan youth to participate wherever they live. In doing so, they represent Tibet on the global stage — and every victory is a win for our cause and our community.”
