Tokyo: Tibetans in Japan and South Korea celebrated the 62nd anniversary of Tibetan democracy day in Tokyo in person and online today. The celebration started with the singing of the Tibetan national anthem.
Representative Arya Tsewang Gyalpo read the speech of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) and spoke on the importance of democracy and how it evolved under the blessing of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He said proper understanding and practice of the democratic system are crucial to community development and the continued existence of the Tibetan struggle for freedom and justice in the homeland.
Ven. Geshe Namkha of South Korea and Mr. Karma Obara of Tibetan Community Japan greeted the participants. They spoke on the importance of unity and preserving Tibetan identity, culture, and religion. They further requested more participation in such gatherings to remind ourselves of our purpose of being in exile.
General Secretary of the Liaison Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibet House, Mrs. Tashi Yangzom, updated the participants on notices from the Administration and clarified issues relating to voluntary taxation (Green book) and the recently conducted population census.
At the end of the celebration, Representative Dr. Arya released the Tibetan version of the book “Harnessing the Dragon’s Fume”, `brug gi dug rlangs la kha gtad, published by the Department of Information and International Relations (DIIR). He briefly spoke on the book’s contents and the importance of how every young Tibetan should study and be proficient in Tibetan history and the current situation.
The book was distributed among those participating in person at the office. Representative of Tibet House Korea, Geshe Namkha thanked the author and expressed a plan to translate the book into the Korean language.
Participants greeted and thanked the Tibet office for organizing the celebration and gave critical feedback on how such a celebration should be conducted to bring more participants.
