Dharamshala: Thirty-four Tibetan youth, hailing from various countries, have convened in Dharamshala for a weeklong Summer Immersion Program, held from 7 to 12 July 2025. Cultural Immersion is organised by the Tibet Advocacy Section of the Department of Information and International Relations (DIIR) in collaboration with the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives (LTWA) at Library of Tibetan Works and Archive. The program seeks to strengthen the participants’ understanding of Tibetan identity, culture, and the ongoing freedom movement.
The intensive weeklong schedule offers an engaging blend of meditation sessions, Buddhist philosophy teachings, introductory Tibetan language classes, and insight into the workings of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA). Participants will also experience traditional Tibetan dance performances and undertake guided visits to key Tibetan civil society organisations in the region.
This initiative serves as a platform to connect Tibetan youth across the diaspora and deepen their understanding of the cultural, spiritual, and political dimensions of the Tibetan exile experience. It is also envisioned to cultivate long-term solidarity and strengthen global advocacy for the Tibetan cause.
During the inaugural session, Secretary Karma Choeying of the DIIR addressed the participants, urging them to develop a holistic and informed understanding of Tibet’s heritage and political struggle. He shared that the immersion program was envisioned as a means to instil a deep-rooted “Tibetan-ness” among the youth, empowering them to carry forward the Tibetan narrative in their own countries and communities. “Such programs,” he emphasised, “are instrumental in creating a global network of informed and committed advocates for Tibet.”
Also speaking at the event was Geshe Lhakdor, Director of LTWA, who warmly welcomed the participants and expressed his long-standing wish to see such youth engagement programs become a reality. He affirmed the LTWA’s commitment to continue hosting such workshops in the future, recognising their value in raising awareness and strengthening cultural ties among Tibetan youth worldwide.
Dukthen Kyi, head of the Tibet Advocacy Section, provided a brief overview of the day’s program and encouraged participants to make the most of the weeklong program.
The Summer Immersion Program marks a significant step in nurturing future Tibetan leaders and advocates, grounded in their heritage and empowered to represent the Tibetan cause on the global stage.
