Copenhagen, 23 January 2025: A delegation of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, comprising Members Geshe Monlam Tharchin, Namgyal Dolkar Lhagyari, and Konchok Yangphel, commenced their advocacy tour in Denmark today with a high-level meeting at the Danish Parliament, Folketinget. The delegation was warmly welcomed by Sascha Faxe MP, foreign affairs spokesperson from the Alternative and a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, who reaffirmed her party’s unwavering support for Tibet and its struggle against China’s oppressive policies.
During the meeting, MP Sascha Faxe introduced the Tibetan delegation to the rich history of the Danish parliamentary system before reiterating her commitment to defending human rights and liberal values in the face of China’s growing influence.
Parliamentarian Namgyal Dolkar Lhagyari provided an in-depth briefing on China’s systematic efforts to eradicate Tibet’s unique language, culture, and identity through the forced assimilation of Tibetan children in colonial boarding schools. She also highlighted the environmental threats posed by China’s relentless construction of mega dams and reckless exploitation of Tibet’s natural resources, which jeopardise the livelihoods of millions reliant on the Tibetan plateau’s fragile ecosystem.
The delegation urged MP Sascha Faxe and the Danish Parliament to translate their support for Tibet into tangible actions and policies to further the Tibetan cause on the international stage. In response, MP Sascha Faxe expressed admiration for the visionary leadership of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in fostering democracy among Tibetans in exile, calling it an inspiring model for the world.
Earlier in the day, the delegation engaged with representatives from European Youth International, exploring avenues for future collaboration, including a potential visit to Dharamshala to deepen their understanding of Tibetan democracy. A lunch meeting with anthropologist and Aarhus University academic Cameron Warner provided further insights into Tibet’s rich cultural heritage and ongoing challenges.
The Tibetan delegation also held productive discussions with Mathias Parsbaek, Director, and Marlene Croydon Harittso, Senior Advisor of the Danish Institute of Parties and Democracy, where they explored collaborative opportunities to showcase the Tibetan democratic framework as a beacon for the global community.
Upon their arrival in Copenhagen on the evening of 22 January, the delegation received a warm reception at the airport from London Representative Tsering Yangkey, Chair of Tibet Support Committee Anders Andersen, and members of the Tibetan community.
As part of their cultural engagements, the delegation attended a screening of the documentary Wisdom of Happiness at Gloria Cinema, followed by a welcome dinner hosted by the Tibet Support Committee board members.
The Tibetan parliamentary delegation’s visit to Denmark will continue with a series of official engagements aimed at raising awareness about the Tibetan cause on the global stage.
