Dharamshala: The Tibet Museum, under the Department of Information and International Relations (CTA), organised its bi-monthly Tibet Awareness Talk Series on 7 January 2026. The guest speaker was Lobsang Sherab, Cartographic Project Advisor, who delivered a lecture on “The Situation of the Entire Tibetan Region during the Ganden Phodrang Period.”
Lobsang Sherab began by explaining in detail the territorial extent, boundaries, administrative divisions, and political status of the three traditional provinces of Tibet prior to the establishment of the Ganden Phodrang government. He further elaborated that, during the period between political disintegration and the rise of the Ganden Phodrang, Tibet was successively ruled by the Sakya, Phagmodrupa, Rinpungpa, and Tsangpa Desi regimes—precedents that ultimately led to the formation of the Ganden Phodrang government. Notably, he stated that at the height of Tibet’s power, the number of Tibetan households in the regions south of East Turkestan exceeded two million, according to some historical sources.
Following the lecture, Lobsang Sherab addressed questions from the audience. The event concluded with a memento presented by Tenzin Topdhen, Director of the Tibet Museum, as a token of appreciation.
Around 30 participants attended the talk, many of whom expressed that they gained a deep understanding not only of the Ganden Phodrang period but also of the broader political and territorial history of Tibet prior to that era.
