Sydney Tibetan Association Protests CCP’s Crackdown on Tibetans in Derge, Kham.
Canberra: Sydney Tibetan Association organised a protest on March 6, 2024, outside the Chinese embassy to condemn the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) severe crackdown on Tibetans in Derge, Kham. The crackdown included the arrest of approximately 1000 Tibetans who participated in peaceful protests against the construction of a dam on the Drichu River. This dam project threatens to displace Tibetan families and violate the sanctity of monasteries, contravening both the Chinese constitution and international laws. The protest also called for the retraction of this unjust law.
Ngawa Choezin and Pasang Kyipa, President and Vice-President of the Sydney Tibetan Association, respectively, along with former MP of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile, Dongdue Kyizom, delivered speeches during the protest. The event concluded with the recitation of prayers. Tibetans from various regions also participated in the protest, demonstrating solidarity with their fellow Tibetans in Derge, Kham. Approximately 300 individuals gathered to voice their condemnation of the CCP’s oppression of Tibetans.
