Sikyong Penpa Tsering Concludes Official Engagements in Shimla with a Public Address
Shimla: Sikyong Penpa Tsering successfully concluded his official engagements in Shimla with a public address on 18 April 2025.
Prior to this, Sikyong briefly interacted with the students of Sambhota Tibetan School, Shimla, during which he introduced the historical status of Tibet, the Tibetan people’s journey into exile, and the benevolent contributions of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He further explained the geopolitical significance of the Tibetan plateau, the importance of Tibetan Buddhism, and the need to preserve Tibetan linguistic and cultural heritage.
In his address to the Tibetan residents, Sikyong stated, “On the 17th, we received assurances from the Honourable Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh that he would provide as much assistance as possible regarding land issues. This is primarily due to the teachings and blessings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Even in the international community, when meeting with prime ministers, almost all of them have met His Holiness the Dalai Lama, heard his teachings, or read his books. They have unwavering faith in and respect for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, which is why we receive such respect and support.”
Sikyong further added, “As His Holiness the Dalai Lama turns 90 this year according to the Gregorian calendar, we are marking it as the ‘Year of Compassion’ worldwide. His Holiness, along with many other spiritual leaders and revered lamas, has been a guiding force in promoting the ancient Indian values of compassion and non-violence in today’s world. We must also do our part to uphold these values. In doing so, the issue of Tibet naturally comes into focus.”
However, Sikyong stressed that the celebrations and events shouldn’t be limited to the Tibetan community alone—they should also actively involve local Indians. He suggested organising exhibitions at universities showcasing the life and work of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, along with talks on Tibetan history. These efforts, Sikyong said, would help raise awareness about Tibet and share His Holiness’s vision more broadly.
Later that afternoon, Sikyong paid obeisance at Dorje Drak Monastery, and visited the Shimla Chief Representative Office, the Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Handicraft Society Office, the local Tibetan Primary Health Centre, and the kindergarten, before wrapping up his day-long programme.
