Dharamshala: A comprehensive sensitisation workshop on preventing sexual harassment in the workplace was conducted for 40 staff members of the Department of Information and International Relations (DIIR), Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) on November 20, 2024. The workshop aimed to raise awareness on various aspects of sexual harassment, equip participants with tools to identify and prevent such behavior, and promote a healthy work environment.
The session was led by the DIIR’s Internal Committee, with key insights provided by the Presiding Officer, Tenzin Chemey, along with committee members Tenzin Topdhen, Migmar Bhuti and Jayang Tsering. Throughout the three-hour workshop, the committee provided in-depth explanations of the various forms and types of sexual harassment, including verbal, physical, and non-verbal harassment. The importance of understanding the definition of a “workplace” was also emphasised, expanding it to include all spaces where work-related interactions take place, whether in person or virtually.
One of the central focuses of the workshop was the role of the Internal Complaint Committee (ICC) in preventing and addressing sexual harassment at workplace. The committee members discussed their responsibilities, the procedures for filing complaints, and the critical steps involved in handling complaints with confidentiality and sensitivity. Participants were introduced to the process of seeking redress through the ICC and how it ensures a fair and supportive environment for both complainants and respondents.
In addition to these discussions, the workshop explored crucial topics such as consent, personal boundaries, and the difference between sexual harassment and gender discrimination. The importance of recognising violence in all its forms and the role each individual plays in fostering a respectful work environment was also highlighted. The committee members underscored the importance of understanding that a healthy work environment is one where mutual respect, dignity, and professionalism are maintained at all times.
As part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, the workshop also included a segment on the importance of this movement. The campaign’s goal to end violence against women and girls was introduced to the staff, and all participants took part in a pledge to actively support the cause.
The workshop was highly interactive, with participants engaging in scenario enactments and role-playing activities. These exercises helped attendees better understand how to recognise and respond to incidents of sexual harassment, building a stronger awareness of preventive measures.
The session concluded with a collective commitment from all participants to work towards creating a safer and more inclusive workplace for everyone.
“We are committed to fostering an environment where all employees feel safe and respected,” said Tenzin Chemey, Presiding Officer of the DIIR Internal Committee. “This workshop has not only informed our staff about the legal and procedural aspects but also engaged them in discussions that will help reduce harassment and promote equality at the workplace.”
The DIIR continues to uphold its commitment to workplace safety and gender equality, ensuring that these crucial issues are not only addressed but actively worked on in every aspect of its functioning.
