London: Representative Tsering Yangey of the Office of Tibet, London, visited Dublin for a very short trip aimed at renewing engagement with Honourable Malcolm Bryne, TD and members of the Tibetan community and Tibet Support Group. The visit marked the first by a London Representative in three years. It came shortly after the formation of Ireland’s new government and the reopening of the Dáil Éireann following the Easter recess.
During the visit, Representative Tsering Yangkey met with Honourable Malcolm Bryne, TD of Fianna Fáil, the leading party in the current ruling coalition. The meeting served as an opportunity to establish initial contact and begin a new phase in working together on issues concerning Tibet.
Honourable Malcolm Bryne welcomed Representative Tsering Yangkey and her delegation – comprising the Chair of Tibet Support Group Ireland, the Chair of the Tibetan Community in Ireland, and community members – at the entrance to the Dáil. He accompanied the group to observe proceedings in both Dáil Éireann, where the Taoiseach was responding to opposition questions, and Seanad Éireann (Upper House).
In a brief conversation following the session, Representative Tsering Yangkey thanked Honourable Malcolm Bryne for his longstanding support for Tibet and recalled Ireland’s role in co-sponsoring United Nations resolutions in 1961 that called for the Tibetan people’s right to self-determination. She also underscored the importance of a peaceful resolution to the Sino-Tibetan conflict and encouraged the Irish government to urge China to resume substantive dialogue with Tibetan representatives.
Tenzin Kunga, Secretary of the Office of Tibet in London, echoed these points and proposed that Honourable Malcolm Bryne consider tabling a written parliamentary question on the status of the Tibetan language under Chinese rule. Drawing on Ireland’s own experience in protecting and reviving the Irish language, he emphasised the importance of linguistic rights for Tibetans.
The Chairperson of the Tibetan Community in Ireland extended an invitation to Honourable Malcolm Bryne to attend the upcoming celebration of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday (Ghoton), to be held in Dublin later this year.
To mark the occasion, Representative Tsering Yangkey presented Honourable Malcolm Bryne with Voice for the Voiceless, the latest book by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, as a token of appreciation.
Afterwards, Representative Tsering Yangkey met informally with members of the Tibetan community at a local café. She encouraged them to strengthen community ties, actively engage with local institutions, and continue promoting Tibetan culture and language—particularly among the younger generation.
Representative Tsering Yangkey and Secretary Tenzin Kunga returned to the United Kingdom later that evening, concluding a constructive and timely visit aimed at re-establishing contacts and exploring avenues for ongoing support for the Tibetan cause in Ireland.
