Bern: As the Swiss Parliament reconvenes for its winter session (from 2 to 19 December), the Swiss Parliamentary Group for Tibet held a sideline meeting on 11 December 2024 to discuss a series of issues concerning Tibet, with the aim of pressuring the Federal Council to adopt resolute and actionable policies.
Presided over by Swiss Parliament Member Nicolas Walter, the meeting was attended by MPs Fabian Molina, Maya Graf, Sibel Arslan, Raphael Mahaim, and Sophie Michaud-Gigon.
Also present were Representative Thinlay Chukki and UN Advocacy Officer Phuntsok Topgyal from the Tibet Bureau in Geneva, along with Thomas Buchli, the former President of the Swiss-Tibetan Friendship Association.
The meeting covered a range of issues, including the situation of Tibetans in Switzerland, the upcoming 2025 World Parliamentarians’ Convention on Tibet (WPCT), the much-anticipated year-long 90th birthday celebration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the 30th anniversary of the disappearance of the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet, a prospective visit to Dharamshala by members of the Swiss Parliament in 2025, and the issue of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama’s reincarnation.
The next meeting of the Swiss Parliamentary Support Group for Tibet will coincide with the 2025 Spring Session of the Swiss Parliament, scheduled to take place from 28 February to 19 March 2025.
