
Representative Karma Singey Attends Tibetan Unity Cup Tournament & Inter-Tibetan Weekend Schools’s Culture Meet in New South Wales
Canberra: Around hundred young Tibetans across Australia came together in Nowra, a city in the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia over the four-day Easter weekend to take part in the Tibetan Unity Cup tournament and participate in the second Inter-Tibetan Weekend Schools’ culture meet.
The Tibetan Unity Cup, is in its 13th years and is recognised as the premier sporting event for younger Tibetans in Australia with aim to provide an opportunity for the young Tibetan to connect, build friendship and strengthen their social networks and celebrate their shared identity through sports and culture.
Nineteen teams from different Tibetan communities across Australia participated in the tournament, including nine men’s and three women’s basketball teams. The Newcastle team bagged this year’s Unity Cup. Sydney Cholsum and the Newcastle girls’ team won men’s and women’s basketball.
Prior to the Unity Cup’s final games, nine Weekend Tibetan Language and Culture Schools participated in the second Inter Culture Meet held at Nowra School of Arts. Representative Karma Singey, who was the chief guest of the occasion, said this culture meet is to provide an opportunity and platform for the students to showcase their talents and empower our youths on the skills of Tibetan songs and dances. He further thanked the parents and teachers for support and encouragement to their children in safeguarding our own distinct culture and identity. The guest of honour Ngawa Choezin, president of the Australian National Tibetan Community, also spoke about importance of the Tibetan weekend school in letting our younger generation to know about their culture and heritage.
