Press Release issued by the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama
His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Visit United States
His Holiness the Dalai Lama will visit the United States on a 21-day tour scheduled from September 4 to 24, 2003. His Holiness will visit San Francisco (California), Bloomington (Indiana), Washington (District of Columbia), Boston (Massachusetts) and New York (New York).
His Holiness arrives in San Francisco on September 4th and will receive an Honorary Doctoral Degree from the University of San Francisco on September 5th, followed by a public address to the University community. That same evening, His Holiness will give a public talk on A Human Approach to World Peace at the San Francisco Symphony Hall.
On September 6th His Holiness arrives in Bloomington where he will inaugurate and consecrate the Chamtse Ling Temple (Land of Compassion), a center for interfaith cooperation and dialogue on the morning of September 7th.
His Holiness will arrive in Washington on September 8th. On September 10th His Holiness will bestow the International Campaign for Tibet’s Light of Truth Awards for 2003. On September 11th He will give a public talk on Cultivating Peace as an Antidote to Violence as part of an interfaith event being organized by the Washington National Cathedral to observe the 2nd anniversary of September 11. His Holiness is also expected to meet with senior Administration officials as well as congressional leaders during His three-day visit.
On September 12th, His Holiness arrives in Boston. On September 13th and 14th, He will participate in the Mind and Life Conference as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. On the evening of September 14th His Holiness will give a public talk on The Global Community and the Need for Universal Responsibility. His Holiness will spend September 15th meeting with the students and faculty at Harvard University followed by an afternoon public talk on Ethics for the New Millennium to the Harvard community.
His Holiness arrives in New York on September 16th. From September 17th to 20th His Holiness will give a four-day teaching where His Holiness is expected to teach on Geshe Chekawa’s Seven Point Mind Training and Jamyang Shepa’s Root Exposition on Tenets. . On the evening of September 19th His Holiness will receive the International League for Human Right’s Annual Award in recognition of His outstanding contribution to international human rights and justice. On September 21st, His Holiness will offer a free public talk on Atisha’s Norbu Trengwa in Central Park. That same evening He will make a brief appearance at A Concert for Peace and Reconciliation sponsored by Healing the Divide. On September 22nd His Holiness will participate in The First Conference of Tibetan Buddhist Dharma Centres of the Americas, a private gathering of Dharma community leaders and students being held in the nearby town of Garrison. On September 23rd His Holiness will participate in a series of dialogues being organised by Tibet House New York. Finally, on September 24th His Holiness will be the keynote speaker at the presentation of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation’s Humanitarian Award to the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims.
His Holiness departs the United States for India on September 24th.
