Poanta: On 6 July 2024, the Tibetan community of the Poanta Chulsum settlement came together to traditionally celebrate the 89th birthday of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. The event was lively, with participation from the community members and monks from Shalu Monastery joining in to celebrate this momentous occasion.
Subsequently, the event was commemorated with attendees offering white scarves in front of a portrait of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. A cake-cutting session and the delivery of statements by the Chairman of the local Tibetan Assembly of Poanta Cholsum, Sherab Gyatso, and the Tibetan Settlement Officer, Gelek Jamyang, followed this.
Cultural performances from the students of Sambhota Tibetan School, Tibetan Women Association, and Lhamo Association further enriched the event. These performances showcased the community’s vibrant touch to the celebration.
Additionally, the community symbolically initiated collective action by freeing fish and distributing clothes to the underprivileged. This year, his Holiness’ birthday anniversary is celebrated as the ‘Universal Day of Compassion’.
