Mongolia: In a historic first, the birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama was celebrated by Mongolians on 6 July 2024 with a large-scale event. The ‘Festival of Compassion’, organised by Telo Tulku Rinpoche, Representative of His Holiness to Russia, Mongolia, and CIS countries was attended by over 600 guests with senior religious figures, foreign ambassadors, and other distinguished guests in attendance.
The festival held at Ulaanbaatar’s Central Palace of Culture welcomed esteemed religious figures including Kundeling Rinpoche, Jhado Rinpoche, and Keutsang Rinpoche, as well as the Deputy Khambo Lama, Gantumuur.
Also in attendance were distinguished guests Atul Malhari Gotsurve, Ambassador of India to Mongolia, Helmut Kulitz, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Mongolia, and Igawahara Masaru Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Mongolia.
“According to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, compassion is universal. It is not related to religious beliefs, therefore on a human level we all need compassion, love, kindness and care,” said Representative Telo Tulku Rinpoche. “Our hope is to continue this festival on an annual basis, dedicating 6 July as a Universal Day of Compassion, honouring the many achievements of His Holiness and his global impact. The concept of the Festival of Compassion is to cultivate human values, amplifying His Holiness’ universal message of peace and working towards a kinder, more compassionate world”.
The programme included the presentation of the Mongolian translation of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Toward a True Kinship of Faiths: How World’s Religions Can Come Together, published by the Diluv Hutugthu Foundation, which was founded by Telo Tulku Rinpoche. Honoured guests were presented with copies of the newly translated book.
Cultural performances included an interactive children’s drama from the Creative Bamboo Theatre, based on the book Seeds of Compassion: Lessons from the Life and Teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, which was translated and published by Asral NGO.
This auspicious occasion also marked a significant moment for artistic collaboration between Tibetan and Mongolian artists, with performances by Grammy Award-nominated Tibetan musician and composer Tenzin Choegyal, renowned Mongolian pop star G. Erdenechimeg, and the Cholugen Mongolian Morin Khuur String Quartet.
The Diluv Hutugthu Foundation, in cooperation with the Jetsundamba Centre and Asral NGO, organised the festival.
