
Ravangla, Sikkim: On 6 July 2025, the Kunphenling Tibetan Settlement in Ravangla observed with profound devotion and joyous spirit the momentous occasion of the 90th Birth Anniversary of His Holiness the Great 14th Dalai Lama. The event was marked by a vibrant display of Tibetan cultural heritage, heartfelt expressions of gratitude, and the strong participation of both the Tibetan community and local Indian dignitaries.
The programme commenced with the arrival of the Chief Guest, Hon’ble Area MLA Shri Rigsal Dorjee, who was warmly received by the community. He was accompanied by a host of distinguished guests including Col. Rajbir Singh Bist as Guest of Honour, Shri Tashi Gyalpo Bhutia as Special Guest, and other respected officials such as DFO Namchi Madam Peggy, Chairperson of the State Women’s Commission Madam Teny Bhutia, SDMs of Rabong and Namchi, OSD Buddha Park Shri Tseten Bhutia, BDO Rabong, as well as heads of various departments, representatives of local monasteries and nunneries, political leaders, and members of the public from the Rabong area.
The celebration formally began with the singing of the Tibetan and Indian national anthems, followed by a cake-cutting ceremony in honour of His Holiness.
In his address, the Tibetan Settlement Officer (TSO) extended a warm welcome to all guests and read the Kashag’s official English statement. He reflected on the invaluable contributions of His Holiness to global peace, the preservation of Tibetan identity, and the promotion of non-violence. The TSO firmly reiterated the importance of preserving the Dalai Lama institution and clarified that the People’s Republic of China has no legitimate authority in determining matters related to the reincarnation of His Holiness, an assertion met with strong support from the gathering.
A series of captivating cultural performances followed, with participation from all seven camps of the settlement as well as students from Sambhota Tibetan School. Their presentations highlighted the resilience, beauty, and richness of Tibetan culture. The cultural show continued after lunch, reinforcing the collective spirit of unity and celebration that defined the day.
As a gesture of appreciation, the TSO presented a memento to the Chief Guest, while the Speaker of the Local Assembly honoured the Special Guest. The President of the Regional Tibetan Freedom Movement also presented a token of appreciation to the Guest of Honour. Additionally, individuals who have made notable contributions to the community were recognised through a special award ceremony, celebrating their commitment and service.
The celebration drew more than 150 attendees, making it one of the largest gatherings ever held in the Kunphenling settlement. The overwhelming participation and the atmosphere of gratitude and devotion made the occasion truly historic and memorable, reinforcing the community’s unwavering bond with His Holiness and their shared dedication to the Tibetan cause.
