Washington DC: Chinese Liaison Officer Tsultrim Gyatso from the Office of Tibet, Washington DC, participated in the symposium on “Non-Violent Resistance, High-Tech Totalitarianism and China’s Future” from 19 to 21 January 2024.
Teng Biao, a renowned Chinese lawyer and political activist, presided over the symposium that was jointly organised by the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, China Action, and the Institute for China’s Democratic Transition. Several numbers of Chinese academics, writers and activists, including prominent Chinese researcher Perry Lin; Prof. Caixia; editor of the pro-democracy journal Beijing Spring, Huping; Founder of IPK media, Wang Ruiqin; well known Uighur activist Ilshat Kokbore; and Tiananmen Square massacre survivor Rose Tang, were invited to the meeting to discuss forthcoming movements and campaigns. The gathering also spoke highly about His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and acknowledged Him as the model for nonviolent activism.
In his address, Chinese Liaison Officer Tsultrim Gyatso stated that His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s nonviolent philosophy is fundamental to finding dialogue-based solutions to all of the world’s problems. He further underscored that a variety of nonviolent initiatives are carrying out by Tibetans in exile to defy China’s oppression of Tibetan people under the leadership of the Central Tibetan Administration per the guidance of His Holiness. Despite the People’s Republic of China’s attempts to eradicate the Tibetan language and culture, the Tibetan representative at the symposium mentioned Tibetan people’s active engagements in the promotion and preservation of Tibetan identity at the same time.
Before adjourning, the conference participants agreed to continue collaborating on future events.
