Washington DC: On Tuesday, July 23rd, the artists of Tibetan Institute for Performing Arts performed an hour-long dance and music program, called ” An evening in Tibet” at George Washington University’s Marvin Center. The event was co-hosted by the Office of Tibet, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and George Washington University.
The event started off with welcome speeches from Benjamin Hopkins, Director of the Sigur Center for Asian Studies at George Washington, Ann-Marie Yastishock, Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Asia Bureau at USAID, Representative Ngodup Tsering, and Samuel Brownback, the Ambassador-at-large for Religious Freedom.
The audience enjoyed the performance thoroughly, which was evident from frequent applauses during the show.
Ambassador Brownback emphasized that he came to support Tibet and Tibetans, and he recalled how Nyima Lhamo spoke “beautifully” at the Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom last week for speaking strongly in support of Tibet.
A light reception followed to celebrate the 84th Birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The artists of the TIPA offered a special song in honor of His Holiness. After that, the crowd sang Happy Birthday and wished His Holiness a very long life. The specially ordered birthday cake was cut jointly by Ann Marie, Director Hopkins, and Representative. The event ended with 30 minutes long Q&A with TIPA director and Artistic Director, moderated by Representative Tsering.
