Darjeeling: On 20 July 2025, despite the persistent drizzle in the early hours of Sunday in Darjeeling, thousands of participants reported to Chowrasta at 5:30 AM, driven by unshakable enthusiasm and a shared sense of purpose. Organisers and volunteers had already gathered by 4:30 AM, setting the stage for what became a powerful celebration of unity, peace, and compassion.
Following a collective warm-up session, the rain eased just in time for the flag-off of the Compassion Run 2025, which saw the participation of over 9,050 runners. The participation of masses symbolised a deep reverence for the timeless message of compassion and human unity as championed by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Although His Holiness’s 90th birthday had passed days earlier, the event served as a heartfelt continuation of the celebrations, echoing his teachings in the very heart of the Hills.
This year’s run brought together individuals from all walks of life—young and old, locals and visitors—across Darjeeling and beyond. More than just a marathon, the event stood as a day of reflection, gratitude, and solidarity. It honoured the Dalai Lama’s lifelong advocacy for kindness, humility, and peace, particularly in a world too often torn by conflict and division.
The Chowrasta was filled with special guests, participants, their families, and numerous tourists who gathered to witness the occasion. The atmosphere was both festive and reverent, with a strong sense of community prevailing.
The Darjeeling local Ghoton Committee, comprising executive members and regional heads, played an instrumental role in the event’s success. From 10:00 to 11:00 AM, they served breakfast, tea, and water to participants and visitors alike. Later, during the felicitation program, a cultural dance performance added colour and vibrancy to the day’s proceedings.
In a gesture of appreciation, the Ghoton Committee unanimously contributed ₹50,000 to the main organiser of the “Run for Dalai Lama”, a 35-km solidarity run held in May 2023 from Darjeeling to Kurseong under the theme #StandWithDalaiLama #RespectTheCulture. That earlier run was organised in response to controversial media reports that attempted to malign His Holiness, and it marked a powerful moment of truth, reconciliation, and cultural affirmation.
The Compassion Run 2025 was officially inaugurated by Shri Anit Thapa, Chairman of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA). Other dignitaries who graced the occasion included Shri Anit Lama, Chief Adviser to the Chief Executive of GTA; Shri Dipen Thakuri, Municipality Chairman; and Shri Tsewang, DSP of Darjeeling Police—all of whom also participated in the run, setting a strong example of leadership through action.
