
Brussels, 17 October 2016 : On Friday, a meeting of a Parliamentary Assistants of the European Parliament, Representative Mr Tashi Phuntsok and EU Advocacy Officer Rigzin Genkhang took place at the European Parliament. They decided to form an informal group and have plans to expand the membership.
Most of these assistants had an audience with His Holiness the Dalai Lama during his recent visit to Brussels.
The assistants are from the major political groups in the European Parliament namely European Peoples Party (EPP), Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), The Greens/European Free Alliance (Greens/EFA) and Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy (EFDD).
The meeting essentially discussed to increase activities in the European Parliament, broaden support for Tibet by political groups, help expand the Tibet Interest Group and raise more often and strongly the issue of Tibet in the European Parliament. Towards this end, the meeting chalked a calendar of various activities in the coming months, in the European Parliament.
The Office of Tibet, Brussels, has also undertaken steps to strengthen the Tibet Interest Group in the European Parliament. Already the Representative and EU Advocacy Officer met with MEP Csaba Sogor. More meetings have been fixed with other Members of the European Parliament.
