
DHARAMSHALA: The 2015 Dharamshala Basketball tournament organised by the Women’s Empowerment Desk of the Department of Home and RTYC Dharamshala began on Sunday, 20 September. Six women’s team and 12 men’s team from across Dharamshala are participating in the tournament which will end on 7 October.
Ms. Ghang Lhamo, former political prisoner and member of Tibetan parliament was invited as the guest of honour. Home Kalon Dolma Gyari and other Tibetan parliamentarians also attended the inaugural match to support the participating teams.
The opening ceremony of the tournament began with a two-minute mourning to honour the sacrifices of the Tibetan self-immolators. Mr. Wangden Kyab, President of the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress (RTYC) gave the introductory speech of the ceremony. Ms. Dechen Wangmo, Coordinator, Women’s Empowerment Desk of the Home Department welcomed the guests and audience. She also took the opportunity to urge Tibetan women across the world to take active participation in the coming general election of 2016.
The first match was held between the women’s team from Men-Tse-Khang and Sarah college. The final match of the day was played at 4:30 PM between Dhasa team and Choe-Sum team.
