DHARAMSHALA: Chinese security forces detained two monks following two separate incidents of peaceful protest against the Chinese government in Ngaba county on Thursday, 10 September.
Authorities arrested Adrak, 20, a Tibetan monk from Kirti monastery. Adrak was arrested while shouting slogans; “freedom in Tibet” and “Long life of His Holiness the Dalia Lama” on Dzomgkar street.
They have also arrested a few other Tibetans who joined in with Adrak’s protest, said Kanyag Tsering, a Tibetan monk based in Kirti monastery in exile.
Adrak is the youngest child of nine children to parents; Zampa and Rigkho. They live in Soruma division in Choejema Township, Ngaba County.
“Adrak’s cousin Lobsang Tsultrim was sentenced to 11 years of imprisonment for alleged links to self-immolation protest in 2012. Tsultrim was also from Kirti monastery,” added Kanyag.
Chinese security forces have also detained a monk Lobsang who took to Dzongkar Street in a similar protest on the same day around 6 pm. He was arrested calling for His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s long life and freedom in Tibet.
Lobsang, 22, is also from Kirti monastery. He is the fourth son of five children of his parents; Gatsey and Nekyi from Chuklay Gapma in Ngaba county.
There was also report of a lay Tibetan being arrested for a similar solo protest but no confirmation has been made so far.
Chinese forces have arrested four Tibetans in the last week alone. Conditions and whereabouts of the concerned Tibetans are still not known. Moreover, the Chinese authorities have installed securities and surveillance in the area, monitoring every movement of the local Tibetans.
