Gangtok, Sikkim: The Gangtok Ghoton Committee, comprising the Tibetan Settlement Office, Six Tibetan Association, Local Tibetan Assembly (LTA), and the Tibetan Language Preservation Committee, organised a three-day photo exhibition at Titanic Park, located in front of Mahatma Gandhi Marg, Gangtok, from 31 March to 2 April. The exhibition was held in celebration of “A Year of Compassion,” honouring the 90th birth anniversary of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.
The exhibition showcased the life and works of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, particularly highlighting his journey since his arrival in India on 31 March 1959, following the invasion of Tibet by the Chinese Communist Party.
The exhibition was inaugurated on the morning of 31 March 2026. The chief guests included Shri Delek Namgyal Barfungpa, MLA of Gangtok, and Shri Tenzing Lamtha, MLA of Shyari. The event was also graced by other distinguished guests, including Shri Dr S.K. Rai, Chairman of the 21 Sikkim Ethnic Communities, and Shri Karma Choedup, Traffic SP. They were joined by the Tibetan Settlement Officer, the Chairman of the Local Tibetan Assembly (LTA), the presidents of the Six Tibetan Association and the Tibetan Language Preservation Committee of Gangtok, as well as Kyiduk Nyerpa, Sakul Mithues, and members of the general public.
The materials used in the exhibition were provided to the Tibetan Settlement Office by the Ghoton Committee of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) for use in exhibitions organised under the “A Year of Compassion” initiative. The Gangtok Ghoton Committee specifically scheduled this exhibition to begin on 31 March 2026, a date of great historical significance. On this day in 1959, following the Chinese Communist Party’s invasion of Tibet, His Holiness the Dalai Lama fled into exile and safely entered India.
The main objective of the exhibition was to raise awareness among local residents and tourists about His Holiness’s lifelong efforts to promote world peace through his message of love and compassion.
The three-day photo exhibition concluded on 2 April 2026. The organisers expressed their deep honour in hosting such an insightful event, which offered the public a glimpse into the extraordinary life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who has tirelessly worked for the betterment of humanity.
