Portland, USA: The Northwest Tibetan Cultural Association (NWTCA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1993, continues its mission to preserve and promote Tibet’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage in the Pacific Northwest, United States. This year, the Tibetan community hosted a vibrant Tibet Day celebration on 13 September 2025, at Pioneer Courthouse Square, Portland’s central public gathering space.
The day-long event was celebrated from 10 a.m to 6 p.m. It was inspired by the global initiative of “Year of Compassion” from 6 July 2025 – 6 July 2026, declared by the Central Tibetan Administration to honor His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama’s 90th year and His lifelong commitment to nonviolence, compassion, and universal responsibility.
Tibet Day brought to life the essence of Tibetan identity through the feature of traditional Tibetan tents (yurts), Tibetan food stalls and cultural merchandise, exhibition of 40 life-size banners chronicling His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s extraordinary life and global impact, Tibetan cultural performances in traditional attire, and Gorshey that invited everyone to join in unity and celebration.
The event was attended by over 1000 people, with approximately 75% being non-Tibetan attendees—a clear sign of growing interest and solidarity from the broader community. Guests expressed deep appreciation for the rare opportunity to engage with the richness of Tibetan culture, history, and spiritual philosophy.
Tibet Day 2025 received widespread media coverage, including by KGW News (NBC affiliate) and OREGONLIVE – The Oregonian, bringing further visibility to the event and to the Tibetan cause.
This event strengthened cross-cultural understanding and honoured the enduring legacy of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, fostering compassion and unity across communities.
