Tibet Awareness programme in Brazil Begins on 27 May[Monday, 23 May 2011, 5:44 p.m.]
NEW YORK: A
Tibet Awareness programme will be organised in Florianopolis in
Southern Brazil from 27 May to 4 June to raise awareness about the
issue of Tibet.The programme will feature live demonstration of
sand mandala preparation, displaying of thangkas (scroll paintings),
photo exhibitions on Tibet, film screenings and talks on Tibet and the
Tibetan people’s way of life.Prof Lia Diskin will brief on the
history of Tibet at the beginning of the programme followed by a talk
on the Tibetan Buddhist culture by Lama Padma Samten (Prof. Alfredo
Aveline of the Federal University in Porto Alegre).Another
feature of the event will be a presentation of perspectives by a
Tibetan artist and his Brazilian counterpart on the Buddhist Art of
Tibet. Tsewang Phuntso, Liaison officer from Office of Tibet
in Latin America, will give talks on the current situation in Tibet and
survival of Tibetan culture in exile.The programme also
includes a discussion on ‘Exploring the inner world: The Asia’s
contribution’ by Santa Catarina, Lama Padma Samten and Alexandre
Mariane, professors from Federal University.Professor Robbie
Barnett of the Modern Tibetan Studies at Columbia University will speak
on China’s Tibet policy and the Tibetan struggle for survival and the
contemporary cultural renaissance in Tibet.The programme for the last day of session will be a panel discussion on “Tibet and the Brazilian Media”
participated by Arthur Veríssimo (Trip Maggazine), Airton Ortiz,
Haroldo Castro (época Revista) and Luis Pelegrinni (Planeta). Ven
Tenzin Thutop and Ven Dhondup Gyaltsen of Namgyal Monastery will
construct a sand mandala of “Medicine Buddha,” on the last day. There
will be also a screening of the film, Tibet’s Cry For Freedom directed
by Lara Damiani and Fire Under the Snow directed by a Japanese
filmmaker, Makoto Sasa.
