Tibet Policy Institute Holds International Symposium on Finding Common Ground

The Tibet Policy Institute (TPI) of the Central Tibetan Administration organised the International Symposium in the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives (LTWA).

Dharamshala: The Tibetan Policy Institute (TPI) hosted an International Symposium on “Finding Common Ground: Strategic Responses in a Changing Global Order” today at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives (LTWA). The symposium brought together a diverse audience, including Tibetan researchers, experts, historians, writers, TPI members, and media professionals from the Tibetan and Indian press, to discuss global challenges and formulate strategies for navigating an evolving geopolitical landscape.

The panellists included Dawa Tsering, Director of the Tibet Policy Research Institute; Yu Dahai, President of Beijing Spring Magazine and director of Human Rights in China and the US; Sang Pu, Chairman of Taiwan-Hong Kong Association; Du Keke, Chairman of Taiwan—Myanmar Citizens Association; Dr Tsewang Dorji, Research Fellow at Tibetan Policy Institute; Yang Wangli, Burmese Freedom Movement; and Yingjun, Tibet Supporter, Taiwan.

Dechen Palmo, PhD candidate, and Dr Kusang Dolma, Phenthok, a Research Fellow at TPI, who participated in the conference, moderated the discussion.

Tempa Gyaltsen, Deputy Director of the Tibet Policy Institute, welcomed attendees at the inaugural session. He emphasised the importance of the conference, noting that the International Symposium on Finding Common Ground has become a pivotal platform for experts. This event facilitates discussions on how various countries and groups can collaborate and develop strategic responses to global challenges. He highlighted that the conference aims to identify standard solutions and strategies in a rapidly changing world.

Director Dawa Tsering delivered the keynote address, highlighting the significance of the conference. He reflected on the enduring struggle of Tibetans for freedom under Chinese occupation, which has persisted for over fifty years. Since the 1950s, the pursuit of Tibetan autonomy and cultural preservation has faced numerous challenges. Despite the considerable geographical and political distances between Tibetan communities, a shared commitment to freedom remains a unifying force.

Director Tsering stated, “Today, we gather to address the challenges posed by China’s repressive policies, underscoring the importance of solidarity and strategic action against these measures affecting both Hong Kong and Tibet.”

He explained that the institute is organising this meeting to exchange ideas and experiences on formulating new policies to counter China amid shifting international politics. The institute aims to collaborate with like-minded groups to confront China, focusing on finding common ground and mutual support between Tibetans and Hong Kong residents.

The meeting stressed the importance of unified and strategic efforts to counter China’s growing influence. Representatives discussed collaborative methods and shared their experiences dealing with China’s policies, proposing a new strategic framework to navigate these challenges. The discussion included Tibetan political figures and experts on China’s repressive measures, aiming to develop a coordinated approach to countering China’s global influence and fostering solidarity among Tibetan communities.

The International Symposium on “Finding Common Ground” highlighted the need for unity and strategic collaboration in tackling global and regional issues. The conference included various panel discussions and interactive Q&A sessions with the audience, marking a significant step towards a cohesive strategy in addressing the evolving geopolitical landscape.
