Dharamshala: A two-day meeting cum
training for heads of the Tibetan schools and student representatives to
discuss ways to prevent drug addiction in schools was held under the
auspices of the Department of Health in Delhi on 19 and 20 November.
Health Kalon Chope Paljor Tsering presided over the programme attended
by principals, rectors, headmasters and student representatives from 16
Tibetan schools. The first day of the meeting was devoted to
exploring ways to prevent the addiction menace through traditional
Tibetan Sowa-Rigpa system of medicine and modern method of psychology.
Doctors and medical experts, including, Dr Pema Dorjee of Men-Tsee Khang
(Tibetan Medical & Astro Institute) and four Indian experts, spoke
on introduction on drug addiction, with particular emphasis on how
teachers can raise awareness in general and guide a student who is on
the verge of addiction. The meeting also reviewed the
resolution passed in the previous meeting held in 2006. The schools
representatives presented their annual work reports, and based on
experiences gained during the reporting period feasible action plan to
be implemented jointly by health department, schools and Kunphen
rehabilitation center has been worked out.The health kalon paid
inspection visits to the Tibetan Settlement Office and community health
centre located in Delhi’s Majnutilla area. The kalon also discussed
health related issues at gathering of the Tibetan settlement officer,
group leaders and general Tibetan public.
