TAIPEI, Taiwan: Braving rain and cold, over a 100 Tibetans and Taiwanese supporters gathered yesterday evening at the Liberty Square of Taipei to mark the 56th Tibetan Uprising Day.
The highlight of the event was the live webcast of simultaneous events being organised in Hong Kong and Kaohsiung to mark the Day.
Addressing the event, Representative Dawa Tsering said that the Taiwanese and Hong Kong people’s support for Tibet is not merely a support for human rights; it is also directly related to the future prospects of their own people.
Yesterday’s event however was the first time that the Tibet supporters in Hong Kong and Taiwan coordinated and held events in unison.
Tenzin Namda, the vice-president of Taiwan Tibetan Welfare Association, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Taiwanese supporters, particularly the youth, who had turned in great numbers and remained put for three hours despite the pouring rain and biting cold.
Representatives from as many as 15 NGO’s participated and addressed the event yesterday in Taipei.
Meanwhile, in Kaohsiung, over 200 Taiwanese supporters participated in a peace procession organised by the Taiwan Tibetan Welfare Association in collaboration with five NGO’s.
Earlier on 8 March, nearly a thousand supporters thronged the streets of Taipei to commemorate the 56th anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan Uprising and express solidarity with Tibetans in exile. More here and here.
