
RIGA: Kalon Dicki Chhoyang of the Department of Information and International Relations (DIIR) ended a busy second day of her visit to Riga, the capital of Latvia, with media interviews for’Diena’, the largest circulation newspaper in Latvia and Satori TV.

Earlier today, the DIIR Kalon gave a talk to Latvian students titled ‘Tibet: A Middle Way Approach towards Peace’ followed by a screening of the ‘Umaylam – Middle Way Approach’ video and a Q&A session. The Kalon gave the students a brief overview of Tibetan history, explained the structure and role of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), gave an account of the current political situation inside Tibet including the tragic cases of the 135 self-immolations since 2009 and the CTA’s proposal for resolving the issue of Tibet through the Middle Way Approach (MWA). At the conclusion of her talk, Kalon Dicki Chhoyang requested the students to share the link to the MWA microsite through social media as an act of support for the Tibetan people.
Kalon Dicki Chhoyang’s first official engagement on her visit to Riga was a meeting on 25 February with members of Tibet Support Group of the Latvian Parliament. The meeting was hosted by Mr Martins Sics, Chair of the Tibet Support Group of the Latvian Parliament. Members of Latvian Tibet Support Groups were also present. In her address she spoke about the current state of political repression, cultural assimilation, economic marginalisation, environmental destruction and the lack of religious freedom inside Tibet. Kalon Dicki Chhoyang then explained in detail the CTA’s MWA proposal for resolving the Tibet issue. A scheduled meeting with the Ombudsman of Latvia to follow immediately after the meeting at Parliament was cancelled by his office with no reason given. DIIR Kalon also gave interviews to news portal ‘Delfi’ and Baltic News Agency, the largest news agency operating in the Baltic States.
Throughout all her engagements during the first two days of her visit, Kalon Dicki Chhoyang has appealed to Latvians to be informed about the CTA’s Middle Way Approach and to take an active role in pressing their government and politicians to support the CTA’s efforts to gain genuine autonomy for Tibetans within the framework of the Chinese Constitution.
On Friday 27 February, the final day of the visit, Kalon Dicki Chhoyang will have further interviews with the Latvian media. She will also meet with Tibet supporters and media from Estonia. Her visit will conclude with a public talk on the current situation in Tibet and the MWA.
