Tibetan students took to the streets in Rebgong in eastern Tibet to protest the Chinese government decision to replace Tibetan with Chinese language as the medium of the instructions in their schools

Dharamshala: Thousands of students in Rebgong in eastern Tibet carried out a peaceful procession on Tuesday morning (19 October), protesting to the Chinese government decision to replace Tibetan with Chinese language as the medium of instruction, sources told TibetNet.The students, who took part in the demonstration, belonged to six different schools in Rebgong. The names of schools are the First Nationalities Middle School of Rebkong Tongren, the Tongren County Yifu Nationalities Middle School, the Tongren District Residential School, the Tongren Modern Medicine College, the Malho National Teacher Training Institute, and the Malho Nationalities Middle School. The students, carrying placards, demanded “Equality and Freedom for Tibetans to use Tibetan language”.The monks of Rebgong Rongpo Monastery and many people from the village also joined the procession.Around 20 to 30 Police vehicles arrived at the spot, but there was no report of any arrests.The protest began at around 8:00 am (local time) and last until 2:30 p.m.More pictures:
