Preliminary round of voting in Phuntsokling Tibetan settlement in the Indian state of Orissa on Sunday, 3 October 2010

The Tibetan people residing in Phuntsokling Settlement in Orissa came
out in large numbers to cast their votes in the preliminary round of
general elections for Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile and Kalon Tripa on
Sunday, 3 October, according to the regional election commissioner.While
observing the election process, it is fair to say that the people are
more aware of their democratic rights as the percentage of voter
turnout is around 94.39%, said Mr Ngawang Yonten, the regional election
commissioner.As per our official record, nearly 20% of the
registered voters would have cast their ballots in other parts of the
country such as sweater selling units and colleges, he added.The
total numbers of eligible voters in Kalon Tripa and parliamentary
elections in Phuntsokling settlement are 1,132 and 1,120 respectively.The final round of voting will take place on 20 March 2011.
