
Rome, 11 December: His Holiness the Dalai Lama will arrive in Rome this morning to take part in the 14th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates. The Summit is dedicated to the memory of late Nobel Laureate President Nelson Mandela.
The Summit has been relocated to Rome from Cape Town at the request of the Nobel Laureates after the South African government refused to issue a visa for His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
The other Nobel Peace Laureates attending the Summit are Mrs. Shirin Ebadi, Mrs. Leymah Gbowee, Mrs. Tawakkol Karman, Mrs. Mairead Maguire, President José Ramos-Horta, Mr. David Trimble, President Lech Walesa, Mrs. Betty Williams and Mrs Jody Willaims. There are also representatives from organisations that have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
The World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates will be hosted by the City of Rome from 12 to 14 December at the invitation of Mayor Ignazio Marino.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama will take part in three different panel discussions on
· Living Peace for Human Development Threats for Sustainable Human Development
· Living Peace, Preventing Wars – Averting Conflicts for Global Security, the role of international institutions
· Peace Crisis – Warfare in Africa and lasting conflicts through the world and
His Holiness will also address students from different countries during a workshop.
Wherever His Holiness the Dalai Lama travels, he speaks on his three commitments in life. The first commitment is the promotion of human values such as compassion, forgiveness, tolerance, contentment and self-discipline. His Holiness refers to these human values as secular ethics.
The second commitment is the promotion of religious harmony and understanding among the world’s major religious traditions.
As a Tibetan and the ‘Dalai Lama’, his third commitment is to work to preserve Tibet’s Buddhist culture, a culture of peace and non-violence.
The World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates based in Rome is the organiser of the Summit. His Holiness leave Rome for New Delhi on 15 December morning.
