Dharamshala:
Two Tibetan schools in south India hosted an interactive talk series on
a range of Tibet’s environmental issues, including the strategic
importance of the plateau’s environment on billions of people living in
the downstream Asian countries. The talk series was conducted by
two environmental researchers from the department of information and
international relation’s environmental and development desk as part of
their policy to create awareness among the schoolchildren. The
researchers delivered talks at the Central School for Tibetans (CST) at
Mundgod Tibetan settlement and CST school at Kollegal settlement on 27
and 28 August.Separate classes were conducted for senior and
junior students at both the schools. Two additional sessions were held
at a primary school and the CST school in Mundgod settlement’s camp no

of the Tibetan plateau and the impacts of detrimental development
activities in Tibet. She also spoke on the impacts of climate change
and the subsequent repercussions on the neighbouring Asian countries,
which depend on Tibetan rivers for survival.Researcher Jigme Norbu touched on the crucial issues of Tibetan rivers, wildlife and endangered species of Tibet. The students took great interest in learning through games, quiz contests and photo exhibitions.Documentary film titled ‘Meltdown in Tibet’ was screened. Around 1474 students attended the talk series.”Our
researchers said the senior students are hesitant, whereas the primary
students are outspoken and asked interesting questions on the issues
discussed during the talk series,” Mr Tenzin Norbu, head of EDD, told Tibetnet.“We
would like to thank the settlement officers and their staff, school
administrators and their team for the wonderful cooperation,” Mr Norbu
said. The researchers will talk to students at CVP school at
Dekyi Larsoe Tibetan settlement in Bylakuppe on 3 September, and CST
school and TCV school at Lugsum Samdupling settlement on 4 September.
