The Department of Home organized a workshop on “Empowering Women to Prevent Sexual Exploitation at Workplace” on 19th June 2014 at Tibetan Career Center, McLeod Ganj, Dharamsala.
Ms. Tenzin Tseyang, the coordinator of Women’s Empowerment Desk, Department of Home conducted the workshop for trainees of Javed Habib Hair Dressing training center and computer program under Tibetan Career Center (TCC) of the Youth Empowerment Support program.
Eighteen women and six men, who are trainees of the Tibetan Career Center and few outside TCC, also participated in this workshop. The goal of this initiative was to reduce possible vulnerability of Tibetan youths especially women or employees, once they start working on their own after completion of their livelihood skills. The objective of this workshop is to bring to focus the concept of Sexual exploitation and abuse, to demystify the complaints mechanism at workplace. It also aims to empower the youths to gather courage to effectively address and challenge incidents of sexual harassment that they might face at workplace.
Mr. Palden Dhondup and Mr. Kunchok Dhondup, the project managers of the Youth Empowerment Support embraced this initiative in the opening function. They congratulated that the trainees are now almost learning, completing their skill training and emphasized that they must use their acquired skills to make themselves self-reliant in future. In their work places, they can be vulnerable to sexual exploitation and shall have to be empowered to address such situation with courage and through proper channel.
Topics covered during the workshop include Sexual Harassment, Valuing Self and Sexual Harassment at Workplace: Prohibition, Prevention and Redressal bill 2013. The participants were active through out by raising many questions, sharing their own personal experiences and perceptions. It successfully ended with a documentary show on “Nirbaya”, to stress the importance of bringing up issues of sexual exploitation in society.
