Since the inception of Gaden Phodrang government during the Fifth Dalai Lama, the system of spiritual and temporal rule by the Dalai Lamas began. From the age of 16 till 76, I assumed the rein of Gaden Phodrang government. My position became semi-retired after the direct election of Kalon Tripa in 2001. Subsequently, I took complete retirement in 2011 following the democratic election of Lobsang Sangay as the political leader. During the swearing-in ceremony of Lobsang Sangay, I said: “I took over the political responsibility from regent Tagdrag Rinpoche at the age of 16. Now, after 60 years, as I hand over the political authority to the democratically-elected political leader Lobsang Sangay, one of my long-cherished aspirations was fulfilled.”
