Tibetans Participate in World Day Against Child Labour [Tuesday, 15 June 2010, 4:50 p.m.]
Dharamshala: Dharamsala observed World Day Against Child Labour on Saturday, 12 June with a panel talk organised by an NGO named Human Steps. Deputy Speaker Gyari Dolma of the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile, Kalon Thupten Lungrig, kalon for department of education and Mr. Jampel Monlam, assistant director of Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy participated in the panel discussion.Kalon Thupten Lungrig said the Kashag has repeatedly requested Tibetans since 1994 to avoid child labour as this is an act against the law of India and international law, while speaking on the Central Tibetan Administration’s policy.The Kalon said keeping children as worker is also against morality.The Kalon highlighted the importance of traditional Tibetan family consisting of grand parents, grand children. He said that during old days Tibetan people used to work hard to live within the traditional system of family. Because of this reason there were no old age homes, no creches, no baby rooms. He said that parents should take care of their children and children should take care of their old parents.Mr.Jampel Monlam gave his talk on the child rights, to proper mental, physical growth and care for the child. UNICEF have called for actions to tackle the underlying poverty that leads to child labour and it calls for effective overall approach by improving quality education to children, especially girls from the poor and rural areas. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the World Day against Child Labour.
